Over 400 Canadians drown every year. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children under 5 years of age. Kids 5-9 years of age are the second most at risk group. Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death for all Canadians under 60 years of age. To put it into perspective for every person who dies in a fire, 3 other drown

Did you know…

Drowning victims rarely call or signal for help because they can’t keep their head or arms above the water.

Drowning is usually silent. Usually when someone drowns, they slip beneath the surface of the water quickly and quietly

Drowning can occur in just inches of water

Adults 25 to 49 years continue to account for the largest absolute number of water-related deaths. Men account for 8 out every 10 drowning victims (81%)

Swim skills are not innate – they need to be taught – and all children deserve the chance to learn

The majority of drowning victims can swim (69%). So while learning to swim is important, further water survival and lifesaving skills are needed to be “Water Smart”

Two thirds of drowning victims did not intend to get wet. This includes boating and non-aquatic activities

Most toddlers drown in backyard pools Toddlers natural curiosity combined with an almost magnetic attraction to water means they have a high risk of drowning anytime they’re near water – natural and man made

Drowning can take as little as ten seconds and will occur in just inches of water – in bathtubs, wading pools, wells, even buckets

Are you prepared for your next water related event?

Be a responsible pet owner! The City of Guelph’s animal control bylaw was designed to restrict dogs from running at large in the city. This includes trails, school yards, driveways, and other public and private property.

Be a responsible pet ownerThe City of Guelph’s animal control bylaw was designed to restrict dogs from running at large in the city. A dog is “at large” if the dog is in a place other than the premises of the owner and not under control of any person. This includes trails, school yards, driveways, and other public and private property.

What does this mean?

In most areas of the city dogs must be on a leash and under control of their handlers. When on a leash, “under control” means the dog is prevented from approaching within one metre of other animals and people.

Where can dogs be off-leash?

Certain parks in the city are designated off-leash areas1. Dogs must remain under control, even when in designated off-leash areas. When off-leash, “under control” means the dog remains close to its handler (within sight and earshot), responds to voice commands, and is prevented from approaching within one metre of other animals and people.

Pit bulls are not exempt from the provisions of the Dog Owner’s Liability Act (DOLA) or Bill 132 in leash-free parks. Pit bulls must be leashed, muzzled and under the control of their guardians in leash-free parks.

Leash-free zones:

Eramosa Park (east of Audrey Av)

Lee Street Park (southern half)

Riverside Park (west of the river and north of Woodlawn Rd)

Norm Jary Park (between the ball diamonds off Applewood Cr)

Margaret Greene Park (west of St Peter’s School)

Crane Park

Centennial Park (off Municipal St: west of tennis bubble; north of ball diamond)

John Gamble Park (south of access road leading to Shadybrook Cr)

As always, there will be up to 31 natural ice rinks located throughout the city this winter. Community ice rinks are maintained by volunteers and neighbourhood groups and you can share the use of these unsupervised ice rinks. The City of Guelph reserves the right to approve locations that are best suited for each neighbourhood and have the infrastructure in place to operate an outdoor ice rink. These rinks are dependent on the weather and prevailing conditions.

The City provides the water hoses, storage boxes, pond hockey nets, hydro and lights with a timer to create these rinks. Volunteers and neighbourhood groups from the community do the rest.

If you have some extra time and would like to volunteer at your neighbourhood ice rink please contact the City of Guelph at 519-837-5628 for more information.
