Several Black individuals in the Guelph and Wellington County community have excelled in music.

The Guelph Mercury makes reference in 1894 to a Black band & "Four in Hand Quartette" and the Guelph Jublilee Singers.

Elwood Lawson played for several years in the Salvation Army Band which he joined in 1913. Mr. Lawson often played at services at the BME Church and was a long time member of the Salvation Army Songster Brigade, singing bass in the choir. The Fabulous P-Js

James Kelso was inspired by Elwood Lawson. Mr. Kelso received a music degree from McGill University and is a very talented piano and saxophone player.

Percy Jewell was a member of the Ajax Sea Cadet Band of Guelph and Ted Jewell was a member of a Guelph teenagers' band. Evelyn Duncan played piano at Harcourt Church on Dean Ave. Melba and Pat Jewell were part of a musical trio called "The Fabulous PJ's" and they travelled around Southern Ontario entertaining audiences.
