An
article in the Guelph Mercury on July 23, 1996 mentions that "some of
Canada's first Black baseball players are resting in Woodlawn
Cemetery, located at Woodlawn Road and Woolwich Street".
These
players are "Hap" Lawson, Danny Johnson, Johnny Duncan, and Frank
Mallot. A photo of the Maple Leaf Baseball Club in Guelph shows one
Black member (1894). Another photo, this one of the Central School "A"
Hockey Team, shows a young Black player.
