Annual Lead the way… Do 50 k campaign kicks off today
Residents urged to observe speed limits to help make Guelph roads even safer.

The City of Guelph, the Guelph Police Service, and their community partners are encouraging drivers to help make Guelph a safer community by following the posted speed limits when driving. The 2006 Lead the way… Do 50 k campaign kicks off today and runs until September 22.

Lead the way… Do 50 k is an annual campaign that encourages drivers to slow down and comply with posted speed limits throughout the city. It also reminds drivers that the speed limit in residential areas is 50 km/h, unless otherwise posted. Failure to comply with posted speed limits increases the chance of speeding fines, demerit points, increased insurance rates and traffic accidents.

Results from a public opinion survey conducted in 2004 by the City show speeding as the number one traffic concern of Guelph residents. The Lead the way… Do 50 k campaign takes aim at this concern by reminding individuals to be more mindful of their own driving habits, including the tendency to speed.

“The Lead the way campaign is an excellent reminder for drivers to slow down and watch out for the city’s more vulnerable travellers, including pedestrians and cyclists,” says Joanne Starr, Supervisor of Traffic Investigations with the City’s Operations Department. “Traffic safety is an issue that affects everyone and by obeying speed limits, residents can help make Guelph a safer community.”
