Guelph - Getting even better
|
A message from Guelph’s Chief Administrative Officer
Nowhere is the promise of new things to come more evident than in our beautiful downtown. Here you’ll find plans underway to redevelop the area near Guelph’s VIA rail station and Greyhound bus terminal where a new transit hub will connect regional and local transit systems. It’s part of a plan to enhance Guelph’s transit system so that it meets the growing needs of people living, working, and studying in Guelph.
Work will soon be underway on Guelph’s remarkable new Civic Square where beautiful spots to gather, view public art and enjoy community events will eventually spill onto bustling Carden Street.
Work is on track on the city’s new Civic Museum beside Guelph’s much-loved Church of Our Lady. The new museum will boast twice the floor space for Guelph’s impressive collections and an important restoration of the Norfolk Street façade.
All of these enhancements are part of Guelph’s preparation for intensification. Throughout the city we’re planning for growth and a trend toward urban lifestyles – more than 50,000 new residents are expected to make Guelph their home in the next twenty years, 7,000 of whom will live downtown.
At the same time, Guelph has a new Business Retention and Expansion Program to assist the City better understand local business issues. A new Economic Development and Tourism Strategy is also in the works.
Connected to these economic development plans and community improvements is the Hanlon Creek Business Park – development of which has been in the works for more than a decade, with construction scheduled to begin in 2010. The Hanlon Creek Business Park recognizes the transition of Guelph’s local economy from its traditional manufacturing base to more innovate technology sectors such as life science, agribusiness, biotechnology and green businesses in environmental and alternative energy technologies. The development strikes an important balance between meeting Guelph’s economic needs and its need to protect our natural heritage.
Simply put, Guelph is a remarkable city and it’s getting even better. Welcome to our website. And welcome to Guelph.
Regards,
Hans Loewig Chief Administrative Officer 519-837-5602 administration@guelph.ca
